初创
乐队初期的灵魂人物是熙德·巴瑞特。他於1965年同理查德·赖特，罗杰·沃特斯和尼克·梅森创立了乐队并奠定了此后的乐风。当时他们推崇两位布鲁斯乐手平克·安德森和弗洛伊德·康塞尔，於是将两人的姓名各取一部作为乐队的名字。1967年平克·弗洛伊德推出了第一张专辑，名为《破晓的笛手》，获得了很大成功，这被认为是英国第一张迷幻摇滚专辑。1968年吉他手大卫·吉默加入乐队。但与此同时巴瑞特却受到精神疾病和药物的影响而逐渐退出乐队。罗杰·沃特斯承担接替巴瑞特作为创作人的角色。
顶峰
在推出了几张不很出名的专辑后，平克·弗洛伊德于1973年推出了《月之暗面（1973 - The Dark Side of the Moon）》。这张专辑獲得極其巨大的成功，成為摇滚乐史上的一个里程碑，专辑在美国排行榜上连续上榜591周，总计上榜超過1600周，為有史以來占據Billboard最高週數之專輯。總計全球銷量至今已超過4000萬張，為人類音樂史上前五暢銷之唱片。《月之暗面》是一张概念性专辑，唱片中的曲目都围绕着现代生活中的压力这个主题。相当的曲目也涉及到了精神疾病的内容。
1975年他们又出了一张新的专辑《願你在此》。此唱片献给已经离队的巴瑞特。此唱片和1977年发行的《动物》同样获得了英美排行第一的好成绩。同时沃特斯的曲风也继续贯彻乐队。
1979年，平克·弗洛伊德发行了《迷墙》。这是一张摇滚歌剧性质的双唱片，总长一个半小时，大部分由沃特斯撰写。唱片讲述了一个英国歌手从孩童起的成长过程，被认为带有沃特斯的自传的影子。主人公父亲阵亡于二战，从小失去父亲的主人公在严酷刻板，摧残个性的教育制度下成长，逐渐个人同外界筑起一座阻隔交流的高墙。最后在《审判》曲目中，高墙被推倒，结束曲《墙外》表现主人公重新回到社会后的迷茫和无助。
《迷墙》造就了平克·弗洛伊德的顶峰。成了西方文化的一个经典作品。专辑本身被改编成电影，由阿伦·派克执导，鲍勃·戈尔多夫主演。
但随着乐队的成功，队员之间的不和也开始显现，由于沃特斯越来越成为乐队的主宰，他同吉默的关系也逐渐恶化。
分手
1983年，在乐队推出了《The final cut》后，平克·弗洛伊德的成员开始各自出专辑。乐队事实上处于解散状态。1987年吉默和梅森重组乐队，但沃特斯并未参加。此后吉默，赖特和梅森继续以平克·弗洛伊德的名义演出和录制唱片。他们的最后一张唱片是1994年的《The Division Bell》，商业上仍然获得很大成功，再次获得英美排行榜双料榜首的成绩
